TILED SOLUTIONS
It doesn't matter how clean you try to be or how conscientious you are in the upkeep of your tiled areas, the grout will discolour over time and start to look grubby. It's just a simple fact of life.
I bet at some point everyone has found themselves on their hands and knees in a shower cubicle clinging onto an old toothbrush for dear life desperately trying to scrub their once white grout back to something like new, while never quite managing it.
So, why is that then?
Well basically all domestic grout products are porous and only partly water resistant. Only epoxy grouts used mainly in commercial food preparation areas are officially classed as waterproof. This means the grout within your average common or garden domestic environment will retain water after use and that process eventually leads to the discolouration we see on an all to often basis in our grout.
Now, a while back I came across a product which claimed to be an epoxy based wonder cure for this particular issue and to be honest I was slightly sceptical. We've all seen those odd looking 'grout pens' in the DIY stores and I simply thought this was an extension of that particular waste of time and money.
How wrong was I?
Very. The professional grout re-colouring product in question is quite simply marvellous. I initially tried it on the kitchen of a customer who was trying to match up some newly fixed tiles with a batch of the same ones already put in place some years before. Obviously it goes without saying that the grout around the newly fixed ones would be fresher and brighter than that showing around the original ones. However, once the grout re-colourant was applied to both areas the old and new areas matched perfectly and the whole room looked fantastic.
The next time I tried the process was on the bathroom of a customer who'd simply waved a white flag trying to get her old discoloured grout back to white. I once again completed the treatment and was even more impressed with the results. Her aged, tired, grimy looking grout sparkled like new and the addition of newly applied silicone to all the joints left her bathroom looking like she had a newly installed suite on site and not one that had been in place for four or five years.
Sounds good, so how does it work then?
Okay, say we have a normal sized family bathroom originally grouted in white that has now gone grubby and even broken down in places. Any flaky or failed patches of grout are raked out and replaced with new. After the new grout has been given two days to fully cure the rest of the remaining grout is then thoroughly cleaned using a phosphoric acid solution and left to dry. When dry, a brilliant white grout colourant is applied to the whole grouted area. Once again this is left to cure, and when ready, any residue is carefully removed from the tile faces to reveal 'as good as new' grout joints that are now sealed, much easier to keep clean and far more water resistant than they were previously. In other words, better than new.
Again it all sounds great, so it must cost a fair bit, right?
No, absolutely not. For the fraction of the cost of a newly installed bathroom or a replacement tiled floor, your existing tiles could be looking brand new once again, but without the disruption of a major refit and more importantly without the expense.
If you would like a no obligation appraisal and a quote from us to return your tiled areas back to brand new by cleaning and re-colouring your grout, please contact Tony on 07841 41935 or via tonyj1963@gmail.com
